Just a 20-25 minute drive from Burnfoot and a must for families with young children.
Bailiffgate MuseumLocated in fthe ormer St Mary’s Church close to Alnwick Castle in one of the oldest parts of the town, Baliffgate Museum and Gallery brings to life the people and places of North Northumberland. Bamburgh Castle and Museum
Still owned by the Armstrong family, Bamburgh Castle was purchased by Burnfoot’s former owner in 1894. Lord Armstrong spent £1million restoring the castle only to die before it was completed. The most iconic image of Northumberland (as featured on our own homepage), the Castle is a must-see just for its breathtaking situation but also houses the Armstrong Museum allowing you to find out more about the creator of your holiday cottage. Beamish portrays a living, working experience of life as it was in the Great North in the early 1800s and 1900s. This is an interesting, entertaining and educational place for children and grown ups of all ages, well worth the drive, but allow a full day. Winner of both British Museum of the Year and European Museum of the Year awards. Chillingham Castle
Said to be one of the most haunted places in Britain. Gardens, Lakes and Parklands, Castle State Rooms, Dungeons and Torture Chamber are open to the public. Cragside House (National Trust)

The regions biggest free museum. Has ‘Turbina’, one of Lord Armstrong’s turbine powered ships on permanent display and has lots of interactive learning displays for children. Grace Darling Museum
This RNLI museum at Bamburgh is dedicated to the heroine, Grace Darling, the rescuer of the Forfarshire. Housteads Roman Fort (National Trust)
You can wander round this fort completely undisturbed and easily imagine the life of a Roman soldier sent to this most northerly of outposts. Well worth combining with a walk along the wall to appreciate the beautiful scenery. Lindisfarne Castle (National Trust)

Situated on Lindisfarne, or Holy Island, Lindisfarne castle is a romantic 16th-century castle with spectacular views, transformed by Lutyens into an Edwardian holiday home. A spectacular wildlife haven off the Northumberland Coast with one of Europe’s largest grey seal colonies. A great day out on one of the many boats operating from Seahouses. Vindolanda Roman Fort and Museum
