Alnwick Castle
History, art, landscape, fun for the children, dining, shopping, exploring – and home of Harry Potter of course.

Alnwick Garden
There’s so much more to explore at The Alnwick Garden. Acres of fascinating plants, water sculptures and the infamous Poison Garden, not to mention one of the world’s largest wooden tree houses. It’s a wonderful contemporary garden, and a fun day out for all the family.

Lilidorei at Alnwick Garden

The world’s biggest children’s play park Lilidorei is a one-of-a-kind magical adventure where it’s Christmas all year round and where fantastical creatures such as goblins, elves, dwarves and pixies are plentiful. The vision behind the new Lilidorei park aims to help children and adults ‘return to their senses’ and enjoy time away from screens and technology. Just a 20-25 minute drive from Burnfoot and a must for families with young children.

Bailiffgate Museum
Located in fthe ormer St Mary’s Church close to Alnwick Castle in one of the oldest parts of the town, Baliffgate Museum and Gallery brings to life the people and places of North Northumberland.

Bamburgh Castle and Museum
Still owned by the Armstrong family, Bamburgh Castle was purchased by Burnfoot’s former owner in 1894. Lord Armstrong spent £1million restoring the castle only to die before it was completed. The most iconic image of Northumberland (as featured on our own homepage), the Castle is a must-see just for its breathtaking situation but also houses the Armstrong Museum allowing you to find out more about the creator of your holiday cottage.

Beamish Museum
Beamish portrays a living, working experience of life as it was in the Great North in the early 1800s and 1900s. This is an interesting, entertaining and educational place for children and grown ups of all ages, well worth the drive, but allow a full day. Winner of both British Museum of the Year and European Museum of the Year awards.

Chillingham Castle
Said to be one of the most haunted places in Britain. Gardens, Lakes and Parklands, Castle State Rooms, Dungeons and Torture Chamber are open to the public.

Cragside House (National Trust)
Groundbreaking home and gardens created by Burnfoot’s illustrious former owner. A great day out for adults and children alike.

Discovery Museum
The regions biggest free museum. Has ‘Turbina’, one of Lord Armstrong’s turbine powered ships on permanent display and has lots of interactive learning displays for children.

Grace Darling Museum
This RNLI museum at Bamburgh is dedicated to the heroine, Grace Darling, the rescuer of the Forfarshire.

Housteads Roman Fort (National Trust)
You can wander round this fort completely undisturbed and easily imagine the life of a Roman soldier sent to this most northerly of outposts. Well worth combining with a walk along the wall to appreciate the beautiful scenery.

Lindisfarne Castle (National Trust)
The iconic image of Northumberland. Situated on Lindisfarne, or Holy Island, Lindisfarne castle is a romantic 16th-century castle with spectacular views, transformed by Lutyens into an Edwardian holiday home. Check tides times in The Northumberland Gazette to plan your day out.

The Farne Islands (National Trust)
A spectacular wildlife haven off the Northumberland Coast with one of Europe’s largest grey seal colonies. A great day out on one of the many boats operating from Seahouses.

Vindolanda Roman Fort and Museum
Fascinating displays of finds that continue to be discovered on Hadrian’s Wall. They regularly organise digs that members of the public can get involved in. Some fantastic walks from there along the Hadrian’s Wall World Heritage Site.
